Parent Meeting Minutes 10/17/2024

OWNCS2 PTO General Meeting Minutes – October

Date, Time, and Location: Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 6:30PM Via Zoom

Meeting called to order by: PTO President- Kathy Vergara at 6:35PM

Note Taker(s): Secretary- Esther Wallace

Timekeeper: Treasurer- Shaenne Toussaint-Islam

Attendees: President- Kathy Vergara, VP- Xaulanda Lewis, Co-Communications Officers-

Clorinda Rivera, Dakina Battle; Treasurer- Shaenne Toussaint-Islam; Teacher Representative-

Ms. Imam; There were 20 attendees; a quorum was reached


ORDERS OF BUSINESS

I. Parent Association Updates/Events

a. Gobble Grams

 PA will hold its annual gobble grams delivery

 Order forms will be given out the end of October

 Gobble grams, with your choice of treats, will be given out Nov 21&22nd

b. 4 th Annual Turkey Giveaway

 Last year’s turkey give-a-way was a success

 Information on how to join the raffle will be given out shortly

 The winners will be announced during the November PA meeting

 A day and time to pick up the turkey(s) will be given to the winners

c. Online Snack Shop – own2pto.com

 Parents can go online to the PA’s website and purchase snacks/treats for the

students. All purchases will be delivered directly to the student towards the

end of the school day Friday

 Wednesdays are the deadline to complete your online order for Friday

deliveries

 There are also non-snack items available such as school supplies, fidgets,

etc.

 Parent volunteers are needed to help pack and hand out the snacks on

Fridays. Please email the PA if you are interested in assisting. You are not

obligated to assist every Friday

 The PA welcomes feedback regarding the online store. Parents who have

suggestions/ideas of items that can be added to the online store can email

the PA


d. Parent Volunteers/Donations

 Volunteers are needed to assist with packaging snack shop orders and

Gobble grams

 If you would like to donate a frozen turkey or snacks/treats for the turkey give-

a-way, gobble grams or the online shop please email the Parent association:

pa_own2@owncs.org


 Please ensure all snack donations are nut-free

 Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to assist this year so far with

packaging snacks

 Email the PA if you are interested in being added to our volunteer list


II. School Updates

a. Smile Day Recap

 OWN2 asked students and staff to wear yellow on October 4 th in honor of

World Smile Day

 The Parent Association handed out little treat bags and took pictures

 If you have pictures of your child you would like to submit please email to the

PA

 A slideshow of pictures will be posted for parents to enjoy

b. Picture Day

 Picture day was held on Oct 11 th

 All students took a picture regardless if a package was pre-purchased or not

 An email was sent by the photo company with the proofs and parents can still

go online and purchase the photo package if they choose

 Photo retakes is planned for February. More information will be sent by the

school


c. Middle School Applications

 Parents of 5 th graders can go online now and apply for Middle Schools

 Deadline to apply is Dec 13 th

 Create an account on myschools.nyc; you can select up to 12 schools

 Please contact Ms. Jannat or Ms. Valencia with any questions or if you need

more assistance

III. Parent Concerns/Comments

a. Powerschool- more than one parent expressed concern that the Powerschool app

does not include an up-to-date schedule for their child’s class. The dates on the

powerschool app and what the students are doing in class does not seem to match

i. Parents who are noticing a discrepancy with Powerschools should reach out

to Ms. Valencia

ii. The PA will discuss the discrepancy with Powerschools at the next

PA/Principal meeting to make sure the school is aware


IV. Reminders

a. Traffic and Congestion – Please remember to be courteous when picking up and

dropping off your child. Utilize the morning drop off line when bringing your children

to school. If you will be walking your child in, please park in the parking lot instead of

double parking on the street

b. School Calendar – Remember to continue checking the school website regularly for

any changes to the school calendar related to Half Days or Holidays

c. Nut-Free School – Please remember, no nut products allowed in the school building

d. Important Dates:


 Oct 18 th & Nov 15 th – Coffee and Conversations- in person and virtual 9:45a-

10:30a. The topic for Oct 18 th will answer the question: “how can you support

your learner at home?” Coffee and muffins will be provided for in person

attendance

 Oct 18 th – 3 rd grade field trip to Green Meadows Farm

 Oct 23 rd – Noon dismissal

 Oct 31 st – No afterschool

 Nov 1 st – School closed for Diwali

 Nov 3 rd – Daylight savings time

 Nov 5 th – School closed for Election Day

 Nov 11 th – School closed for Veteran’s Day

 Nov 20 th – Noon dismissal for Parent/Teacher Conferences

 Nov 21 st – Next scheduled PA meeting: feel free to email topics or concerns

ahead of the meeting that you would like addressed

 Nov 28 & 29 th – School Closed for Thanksgiving


CLOSING

Next meeting is November 21, 2024 at 6:30pm
