Parent Meeting Minutes 03/21/2024

OWNCS2 PTO General Meeting Minutes – March

Date, Time, and Location: Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 6:30PM Via Zoom

Meeting called to order by: PTO President- Kathy Vergara at 6:35PM

Note Taker(s): Secretary- Esther Wallace

Timekeeper: Treasurer- Shaenne Toussaint-Islam

Attendees: President- Kathy Vergara, VP- Xaulanda Lewis, Co-communications Officers-

Dakina Darrien-Battle & Clorinda Rivera, Secretary- Esther Wallace, Treasurer- Shaenne

Toussaint-Islam; There were 30 attendees; a quorum was reached

ORDERS OF BUSINESS

I. Events Recap/Updates

a. Financial Update

 Current PTO account balance is $3,216

 The online store brought in $200.15 in the last month

 Thank you to all parents for your continued support

b. Online Snack Table

 Online store opens every Sunday and stays open until Thursday at 3pm

 Parents can purchase snacks online up to Thursday at 3pm and the

packaged snacks will be delivered to the child’s classroom toward the end of

the school day

 If your child is absent from school that Friday, they will receive their snack the

following week Friday

 Any parents who would like to volunteer helping package the items can email

the PTO

c. Pi Day

 Pi Day did not happen as usually scheduled in the past on March 14. This

was because the school had a few activities happening simultaneously and

the PTO did not want to add more to the parent’s plate

 The Pi Day event will likely instead be rescheduled for a date in May

 Notices will be sent out to parents once the new date has been confirmed

 The PTO will likely need parents to help volunteer to set up the event. A sign-

up sheet will be posted on Bloomz as we get closer

d. Read-a-thon

 The school has started their read-a-thon. Flyers were sent home with the

students

 This year the company being used for the read-a-thon will allot 15% of the

money raised for the student to spend in their prize shop

 You can ask friends, family members, neighbors, etc. to donate

 The website will keep track of each child’s reading time and at the end of the

read-a-thon the class with the most reading time will receive a prize

e. Egg Treasure Hunt

 PTO will be planning another Egg Hunt this year

 This will likely be held in the park across the street from the school, similar to

last year

 More information will be sent out to parents once the details have been

finalized

II. School Updates

a. Black History Month Presentation

 The school held it’s Black History month presentation which seemed to be

very enjoyable and well put together for the students

 The presentation included drummers, dancing and step performances

 We thank the school staff for putting together a wonderful presentation

b. 21 st Century Dance Performance

 21 st Century had their afterschool dance performance in collaboration with

Alvin Ailey

 For parents who did not get to see their child perform, you can email the PTO

or the school directly to request video footage

c. STEAM Program- Mr. Omar

 Project Lead the Way – innovative project-based learning that incorporates

science, engineering, technology and math. It empowers students to develop

in demand skills by exploring real world challenges

 Students are being taught technical skills and h ow to problem solve

 The program consists of modules and activities that assist with translating

their learned skills to real world problems

 Each grade explores engineering and technology

 The program provides an introduction to coding

 The STEAM projects done in class will be featured in the art show held on

May 1 st

d. Graduation 2024

 Many parents asked for updates regarding school graduation

 PTO was not informed if the school has started its graduation planning as yet

 Once information regarding information is released the PTO will share with

parents

 PTO will inquire about graduation planning

 Parents can also contact Ms. Valencia or Ms. Wallace regarding graduation

questions and concerns

III. Reminders

a. Traffic and Congestion – Please remember to be courteous when picking up and

dropping off your child. Do not double and triple park in front of the school building as

this creates an unsafe environment for our students and families

b. School Calendar – Remember to continue checking the school website regularly for

any changes to the school calendar related to Half Days or Holidays

c. Nut-Free School – Please remember, no nut products allowed in the school building

d. Important Dates:

 State Exams for grades 3-5 start next month!

 March 27 th – Admissions Dept’s Family Night at 360 Bowl- Reach out to Mr.

McLean

 March 28 th – There WILL be afterschool in session

 March 29 th – School is closed

 April 17 th – Noon dismissal

 April 18th &19th – No After school

 April 22 nd -26 th – School is closed

CLOSING

Next meeting is Thursday, April 18 th at 6:30PM
