Parent Meeting Minutes 03/16/2023

OWNCS2 PTO General Meeting Minutes - March

Date, Time, and Location: Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 6:30PM Via Zoom

Meeting called to order by: President- Kathy Vergara at 6:40PM

Note Taker(s): Secretary- Esther Wallace

Timekeeper: Treasurer- Shaenne Toussaint-Islam

Attendees: President- Kathy Vergara, Secretary- Esther Wallace, Communications Officer-

Clorinda Rivera, Treasurer- Shaenne Toussaint-Islam. There were 27 attendees; a quorum was

reached.


ORDERS OF BUSINESS

I. PTO Events/Updates

a. St. Patrick’s Day

 Please wear green to school on 3/17/23

 Feel free to email pictures of your kids and family wearing green to the PTO

email and it may be posted on Class Dojo and/or PTO Instagram account

 PTO will provide small treats for the students

b. Women’s Month

 There will be a section on the PTO bulletin board dedicated to the women

that work at OWN2

 Staff pictures will be placed on the board next to the heart names that

families sent in last month

 PTO will post pictures and/or videos of the wall for parents and families to

see

c. Easter Egg Hunt

 PTO will be planning an Easter egg hunt- date still to be determined

 Some activities may include: egg hunt, arts and crafts to take home, photo

opportunity with a Easter bunny, gift baskets and more

 This event is for all students of OWN2 along with their families and friends

with a potential max capacity of 150 people

 Tickets will cost $10/child, adults are free. Tickets can be purchased on

GiveButter

 PTO welcomes any parents who are willing to volunteer for this event. Parent

volunteers will receive free admission for their child as a thank you


d. Pie Day

 Due to scheduling conflicts, Pie Day was rescheduled for MARCH 30, 2023

 So far the event has raised $1600 in donations. We are closer to our goal of

$5,000 which the amount needed to have an end of year carnival

 The proceeds of the fundraiser help fund the majority of our end of year

carnival

 There will be prizes for the top fundraisers:


1. Top 3 students overall will automatically get to pie a teacher of their

choice

2. Top 3 classes will get to watch “Pi” Day live in the multipurpose room.

These children will have their names randomly selected to throw pies

at the staff!

3. Top fundraising class will receive a separate prize which TBD (i.e.

Class party, Class trip)

4. Top 5 th grader will get all senior dues paid for by PTO

 As of now, the 3 classes in the lead are: (1) 202, (2) 201, (3) 206

 All students and families will be able to watch “Pi” Day via Zoom

 Students are encouraged to speak with family, friends and neighbors about

donating and supporting their class in the fundraising competition


e. End of Year Carnival

 PTO plans to repeat the popular end of year carnival in June

 The success of the carnival greatly depends on the number of volunteer

parents to help at the carnival as well as the amount of money raised

throughout the school year

 If interested in volunteering please contact the PTO

 More information regarding the Carnival will be sent out

f. PTO Elections

 This is the 2 nd year for the current PTO’s term. Elections will be held to

determine the PTO executive board members for 2023-2024 school year

 Roles: President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer,

Communications Officer

 Three volunteers are also needed for the Election Committee- responsibilities

include collecting names of nominees and counting elections electronic votes.

Members of the Election Committee cannot also run for office or be a current

member of the PTO

 Parents who are interested in PTO office or volunteering for the Election

Committee can email the PTO


II. School Updates

a. International Day - 6/8/23

 Mr. Thompson will be hosting another international day festival this year

 This year’s International Day will focus on South America, Central America

and Spain.

However, children and families can feel free to represent their countries of

origin or pick a country that they are found of

 This year’s activities will include red carpet fashion modeling, international

cuisine, live entertainment and more

 Mr. Thompson is requesting parents to volunteer to help with the set up and

at the different country tables


 The school will allow 32 parents inside of the building to assist with the

events. Any parents interested in volunteering during the school day can

email Mr. Thompson (kthompson@owncs.org)


b. Bullying Concerns

 Some parents have brought the concern of possible bullying at the school to

the school’s attention

 Mr. Wilkins will be holding a Zoom meeting for parents on 3/17/23 at noon to

address those concerns

 Parents who are currently facing an issue regarding bullying are encouraged

to email Mr. Wilkins. Parents have the option to also CC the PTO on those

emails

c. Career Fair- 3/29/23

 OWN2 will be holding a career fair to fill some of the vacant positions at the

school

 If any parents are interested or if you know someone who may be interested

in working at OWN2, please attend the Career Fair on 3/29 and bring a

resume

III. Reminders

a. Traffic and Congestion – Please remember to be courteous when picking up and

dropping off your child. Do not double and triple park in front of the school building as

this creates an unsafe environment for our students and families

b. School Calendar – Remember to continue checking the school website regularly for

any changes to the school calendar related to Half Days or Holidays
