OWNCS2 PTO General Meeting Minutes - February
Date, Time, and Location: Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 6:30PM Via Zoom
Meeting called to order by: President- Kathy Vergara at 6:45PM

Clorinda Rivera, Treasurer- Shaenne Toussaint-Islam. There were 20 attendees; a quorum was
reached.
ORDERS OF BUSINESS
I. PTO Events/Updates
a. Heart Wall
The PTO has transformed our bulletin board into a heart wall
We have received numerous names and continue to update the wall
PTO will continue collecting names of special ones in your lives to add to our
wall throughout the month of February
Pictures and videos of the Heart Wall will be sent out to parents and families
Thank you all for your participation and donations
b. Staff Steps Challenge
PTO has challenged OWN2 staff to increase their daily steps for the month of
Feb in honor of Heart Health Month
We have 7 teams that have signed up to participate in the challenge
We encourage students and parents to cheer on their teachers and staff as
well
PTO will send out a poll to families to vote for their favorite team names to
had some fun to the friendly competition
A small incentive will be provided for the staff at the end of the challenge
c. Pie Day (aka “Pi” 3.14)
We will repeat our popular fundraising event on 3/14/23
Last year students thoroughly enjoyed throwing pies at the staff and watching
their teachers get pies thrown in their faces
This year we have even more staff who signed up for an opportunity to be
pied by their students
The proceeds of the fundraiser help fund the majority of our end of year
carnival
There will be prizes for the top fundraisers:
1. Top 3 classes will get to watch “Pi” Day live in the multipurpose room.
These children will have their names randomly selected to throw pies
at the staff!
2. Top fundraising class will receive a separate prize which TBD (i.e.
Class party, Class trip)
3. Top 5 th grader will get all senior dues paid for by PTO
All students and families will be able to watch “Pi” Day via Zoom
Students are encouraged to speak with family, friends and neighbors about
donating and supporting their class in the fundraising competition
d. End of Year Carnival
PTO plans to repeat the popular end of year carnival in June
The success of the carnival greatly depends on the number of volunteer
parents to help at the carnival
The number of carnival activities will therefore be based on the number of
volunteers
If interested in volunteering please contact the PTO
More information regarding the Carnival will be sent out
e. PTO Elections
This is the 2 nd year for the current PTO’s term. Elections will be held to
determine the PTO executive board members for 2023-2024 school year
Roles: President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer,
Communications Officer
Three volunteers are also needed for the Election Committee- responsibilities
include collecting names of nominees and counting elections electronic votes.
Members of the Election Committee cannot also run for office or be a current
member of the PTO
Parents who are interested in PTO office or volunteering for the Election
Committee can email the PTO
Last year’s International Day was a huge success for staff and students
This year’s International Day will focus on South America, Central America
and Spain.
However, children and families can feel free to represent their countries of
origin or pick a country that they are found of
This year’s activities will include red carpet fashion modeling, international
cuisine, live entertainment and more
Mr. Thompson is requesting parents to volunteer to help with the set up and
at the different country tables
Any parents interested in volunteering on June 8 th during the school day can
email Mr. Thompson
II. School Updates
a. International Day - 6/8/23
Mr. Thompson will be hosting another international day festival this year
This year’s International Day will focus on South America, Central America
and Spain.
However, children and families can feel free to represent their countries of
origin or pick a country that they are found of

b. State Testing
If you did not get the link for previous state tests or if you have additional test prep questions please
email Ms. Imam or Ms. Haynes
III. Reminders
a. Winter Break will be from Mon Feb 20 th – Feb 24 th – school will be closed
b. Half Day- March 1st
c. Traffic and Congestion – Please remember to be courteous when picking up and
dropping off your child. Do not double and triple park in front of the school building as
this creates an unsafe environment for our students and families
d. School Calendar – Remember to continue checking the school website regularly for
any changes to the school calendar related to Half Days or Holidays
