Parent Meeting Minutes 02/15/2024

OWNCS2 PTO General Meeting Minutes – February

Date, Time, and Location: Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 6:30PM Via Zoom

Meeting called to order by: PTO President- Kathy Vergara at 6:35PM

Note Taker(s): Secretary- Esther Wallace

Timekeeper: Treasurer- Shaenne Toussaint-Islam

Attendees: President- Kathy Vergara, VP- Xaulanda Lewis, Co-communications Officers-

Dakina Darrien-Battle & Clorinda Rivera, Secretary- Esther Wallace, Treasurer- Shaenne

Toussaint-Islam; There were 30 attendees; a quorum was reached

ORDERS OF BUSINESS

I. Events/Updates

a. Financial Update

 Current PTO account balance is $3,524

 The PTO online store has been doing really well- It has brought in a little over

$400 since it launched last month

 Heart Wall- PTO received $424 in donations towards the heart wall

 Thank you to all parents for your continued support

b. Heart Wall/Month

 PTO members dressed up in red on Feb 14 th and went around the school

visiting classrooms

 Younger grades received heart health coloring handouts and older grades

received an activity sheet

 All students received little treats as well

c. Online Snack Table

 Online store opens every Sunday and stays open until Thursday at 3pm

 Parents can purchase snacks online up to Thursday at 3pm and the

packaged snacks will be delivered to the child’s classroom toward the end of

the school day

 If your child is absent from school that Friday, they will receive their snack the

following week Friday

 Any parents who would like to volunteer helping package the items can email

the PTO

d. Heart Wall

 As part of heart health awareness month, PTO will set up a heart wall in the

school

 Forms have been sent home with students

 Your child or family member’s name can be put on our wall. A $5 donation will

include your child’s picture on the wall

 Wear Red Day will be on Feb 12 th . We ask that all students and staff wear red

e. Pi Day/Read-a-thon

 PTO will be meeting with librarian, Ms. Sharkey, to discuss the details of the

school read-a-thon

 School/PTO will provide more information soon

f. Take One/Leave One Bookshelf

 The take one, leave one library bookshelf is up and running in the lobby next

to the elevator

 There have already been some books donated, mostly for younger grades.

Families can drop off more books to the PTO office or place on the bookshelf

in the lobby

 The bookshelf will be located in the school lobby and books will be organized

by grade level

II. School Updates

a. Unsafe Driving/Parking – “See Something, Say Something”

 There have been a few incidents of unsafe driving and parking during drop off

and pick up. Many parents have spoken to the PTO regarding their concerns

 PTO spoke with both Mr. Ferguson and Ms. McAfee regarding the situation

 Mr. Ferguson has offered to submit the information of the repeat offenders to

the local authorities and Ms. McAfee has also agreed to speak with those

parents

 PTO has created a Google Form so that all parents/guardians can submit the

information of the cars they observe being unsafe (speeding, triple parked,

obstructing traffic, etc.)

 PTO and school administration will have access to the information submitted

from the Google form

 The form is anonymous and will not ask for the information of the person

submitting it

b. STEAM Program

 Next month Mr. Omar will join the PTO meeting to present on the school’s

STEAM program

 Please join us at the next PTO meeting to hear about how the STEAM

program is progressing, what the students have been learning and ask any

questions you may have regarding the program

c. Black History Month- Ms. Jordan

 OWN2 has put together a Black History Month committee

 This year the focus will be on honoring the people of the past and the future

 Students have recently been learning about leaders close to their own age

 After the winter break the focus will be honoring the future- this will highlight

the school staff and students who are doing great things now (i.e.

entrepreneurs, authors, etc.)

 The school will also put together a Black History Month presentation-

scheduled for March 7 th

 More information regarding attending the presentation will be sent out by the

school shortly

d. School Survey

 The school survey for 2024 is now out

 Please complete the survey as soon as you can

 Contact Ms. Valencia if you need more information on how to complete it

III. Reminders

a. Traffic and Congestion – Please remember to be courteous when picking up and

dropping off your child. Do not double and triple park in front of the school building as

this creates an unsafe environment for our students and families

b. School Calendar – Remember to continue checking the school website regularly for

any changes to the school calendar related to Half Days or Holidays

c. Nut-Free School – Please remember, no nut products allowed in the school building

d. Important Dates:

 Feb 16 th – No afterschool

 Feb 19-23 – School closed for Mid-Winter break

 Feb 19 th - 23 rd - School closed for Mid-Winter break
